In Britain the trend in divorces is changing. More and more over 50s are deciding to part ways than ever before.
The trend seems to suggest that older men and women are waiting until their children have grown up and moved out before divorcing each other rather than growing old with someone they do not love any more.
This trend is so marked that over the past decade the divorce rate amongst the over 50s has grown by almost 20%, despite the fact that the total divorce rate actually dropped.
Sociologists have coined the phrase ‘Swofties’ for the new breed of single women over fifty who are finding a enw lease of life following their divorces. The only downside they are experiencing is the fact that for some of these women, independance is proving a challenge because they have always relied on husbands to deal with money matters.
